During the 2nd. World War, Malacca was occupied by the Japanese army in 1942.
Since the Japanese needed to build a railway line to supply supplies from Thailand into Burma, they constructed the Death Railway in Kanchanaburi with these captured prisoners of war.
They removed the railway track from Malacca to build the Death railway.
The conscripted labour had to build this line through the inhospitable rain forests.
Thousands of these labour toiled under hazardous conditions like malnutrition, malaria and humid weather.
They suffered and thousands died in building this railway which was named The Death Railway.
Since then, Malacca has lost her railway.
In 2020, the Malaysian and Singapore governments have agreed to construct a High Speed Train (HSR) line from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.
Hopefully, if the HSR is completed, traveling time from Singapore to KL will take 90 minutes only.
Malacca will be one of the HSR stations.
When that happens in 2031, Malacca will be linked by train again after more than 90 years.
