NEW TOURISM PRODUCTS IN MELAKA

PPSPM to develop new tourism products for Visit Melaka Year 2024

MELAKA – The Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation (PPSPM) will diversify its tourism products, including introducing a floating market as a new attraction in preparation for Visit Melaka Year (TMM) 2024.

PPSPM chief executive officer Datuk Murad Husin said the second phase of the Melaka River development project with the developer covers the area around Taman Lagenda and is expected to be operational next year.

“We are trying to take a different approach from floating markets in other places by selling Melaka products and dry food. It will also be accessible to passengers on the Melaka River Cruise, which travels along the river.

“In addition, PPSPM is targeting to make the Sigua (or Monitor Lizard) Mini Theme Park, set to open at the end of this year, as a new attraction to this state,” he told reporters after the inauguration of PPSPM’s new office and the launch of the Melaka Water Taxi in conjunction with the Aidilfitri open house here last night.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh officiated the ceremony, with state Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman also present.

In the meantime, Murad said the water taxi service is seen as an alternative for tourists to tour around Banda Hilir when the tourist area is made a vehicle-free zone every Friday to Sunday, which is expected to be implemented next month.

“The price offered is reasonable, from as low as RM1 to RM10, and visitors can park their vehicles at any parking area to take a water taxi to their destination,” he said.

As of May 15, the Melaka River Cruise has attracted 283,540 visitors, and a target of 800,000 visitors has been set for this year.

“Last year, we recorded 792,215 local and foreign visitors, exceeding the target of 700,000 people,” he said. – Bernama

MELAKA: Melaka Chief Minister has launched the water taxi service along the Sungai Melaka waterway after a 10-year wait.

Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Jusoh officially commenced the urban water taxi service on Tuesday (May 16) night soon after launching the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation’s (PPSPM) new headquarters at Dataran Pengakalan Rama here.

In his speech, Ab Rauf said PPSM has grown by leaps and bounds since it was established in 2005.

He said in the beginning, the River Cruise service only recorded 3,290 passengers.

"However, a whopping 13 million people have used the River Cruise service between 2006 and May 8 this year.

"This is an outstanding achievement within a time frame of 18 years," he said.

Ab Rauf said PPSPM started with two boats as its River Cruise Service and now has a fleet of 40 boats.

"PPSPM now has a water taxi service," he said.

The initial plan to introduce the water taxi service was made by the then Melaka chief minister Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam, back in 2011.

Dr Mohd Ali is currently the Yang-di Pertua of Melaka.

However, the RM130mil rehabilitation and beautification of Sungai Melaka hit a snag after the earlier contractor appointed by then

Natural Resources and Environment Ministry failed to complete the project as scheduled in 2017.

The project involves the widening and extension work of the river by another 2.3km to enable the water taxis to stop and pick up passengers from five new jetties along the second phase from Dataran Pengkalan Rama to Batu Hampar in Batu Berendam.

Meanwhile, PPSPM chief executive officer, Datuk Murad Husin said there will be dozens of jetties for the water taxis to serve the passengers along the waterway from Dataran Pengkalan Rama.

He said the fare from one jetty to another will cost RM1 and the total for the full route will be RM8.

Murad said PPSPM also plans to extend the water taxi service up to Batu Hampar under the second phase of the River Cruise route.

"However, we are facing the issue of sediment which impedes the boat movements.

"We are working closely with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage to resolve this," he said.

Murad said the water taxi service can currently reach up to Rumpun Bahagia jetty under the second phase and the plan is to extend up to the Melaka Sentral bus terminal

PROJECTS TO PULAU BESAR?

Another way to connect Pulau Besar to Teluk Mas is to construct a 4 km landbridge.

This is a direct route where a toll system can be implemented.

A cable car system can also be considered.

To construct a 4km cable car system to Pulau Besar may cost about RM 285 million.

To recover this infra investment in 6 years, at least 1.5 million visitors per year must visit Pulau Besar at RM 30.00 each.

Currently, visitors to Pulau Besar take boats from the mainland to the island.
