KUALA LUMPUR: Khairul Hafiz Jantan clocked a personal best of 20.90 seconds to break the men's 200m national record in the Malaysian Open Athletics Championships at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday.
The Melaka sprinter, who will turn 19 on Saturday, erased the 49-year-old record of 20.92 set by Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan in the semi-finals of the 1968 Mexico Olympics Games.
Khairul, who holds the 100m record of 10.18, said that he never expected to shatter the oldest record in athletics.
"I ran as fast I could and was delighted with my achievements.
"I thank God. All my prayers have been answered. I feel on top of the world," said Khairul.
