The Chettis of Melaka (also known as Chitty Melaka) are a distinctive community in Malaysia, often called the "Indian Peranakans" . They are descendants of South Indian traders who settled in Melaka between the 15th and 16th centuries and intermarried with local Malay, Javanese, and Chinese women .
📜 A Unique Cultural Tapestry
The Chettis are a testament to cultural fusion while fiercely guarding their Hindu faith :
· Father's Faith, Mother's Tongue: The earliest Chetti men were Tamil-speaking Hindus, but their children were raised by their local, non-Tamil-speaking mothers. This led to Malay becoming their mother tongue, while Tamil is mainly used in religious rituals .
· Religious Practices: Though staunch Saivite Hindus, they have adapted customs from other cultures. For example, they bury their dead (like Muslims and Chinese) rather than cremate them , and they celebrate Parchu Pongal—a unique ancestral offering that features nasi lemak on banana leaves .
· Food and Language: Their cuisine blends local ingredients (belacan, coconut milk) with Indian spices, while their unique "Chetti Creole" mixes Malay, Tamil, and Chinese phrases .
🏛️ Legacy and Preservation
Today, the community is small and widely dispersed, with roughly 2,000 people in Malaysia and more in Singapore .
· The Spiritual Heart: Their identity is anchored in Kampung Chetti in Melaka, home to the Sri Poyatha Venayagar Moorthi Temple—the oldest Hindu temple in Malaysia and one of the oldest in Southeast Asia, built in 1781 .
· Modern Efforts: With their youth migrating to cities, elders are actively preserving their heritage. They recently published a cookbook documenting centuries-old recipes and run a museum at Kampung Chetti to prevent their unique culture from fading away .
