MELAKA PARTNERS WITH CHINA WATER TOWN

Melaka eyes tourism partnership with China’s Zhouzhuang water town

MELAKA: A proposed partnership between China's premier water town and the historic city can unlock new tourism and cultural opportunities while strengthening centuries-old ties between the two destinations, says Datuk Lim Ban Hong.

The Special Adviser on Investment and China Affairs to the Melaka Chief Minister, who also serves as the Melaka Special Envoy to China, said discussions would be held with the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM) on establishing a working relationship with Kunshan Water Town Zhouzhuang Cultural Tourism Development Group Co. Ltd.

Lim, who is also the Klebang assemblyman, said although Zhouzhuang was not a seaport, the ancient town played an important role in China's inland waterway transport and commercial network, supporting the Maritime Silk Road during the Ming Dynasty through its extensive canal system linking major trading centres.

He said both Zhouzhuang and Melaka share a rich history shaped by waterways, making them natural partners in preserving cultural heritage while developing high-value tourism products.

FORGOTTEN MALACCA RAILWAY STATION

 Forgotten Malacca railway station

In 1914, it was possible to travel to Malacca (Melaka) by train via the 32 km branch line from Tampin to Malacca town which was opened in 1905. The Japanese pulled up the rails during World War II for re-use on the infamous Death Railway in Burma (Myanmar). The line was never rebuilt after the War. The station used to be on Bona Vista Road, today's Jalan Hang Tuah.

The 1914 Pamphlet of Information for Travellers, Tours in the Malay Peninsula has a lot to say about Malacca.

Here are some of the highlights:

'The scenery on that section of the railway which lies between Rembau Station and Malacca is, without doubt, the most beautiful on the whole line, especially the piece between Malacca and Tampin. It is, therefore, a pity to reach and return from Malacca by the night trains, since the views are lost. The road runs alongside the railway most of the way, and is, for scenery, the fairest in the Peninsula. The distant blue hills, the rice-fields, the Malay orchards, every now and then a bright river, or ponds full of lotus provide views which will never be forgotten.'

WHY NOT EXTEND ETS FROM TAMPIN TO MELAKA SENTRAL, MUAR, BATU PAHAT AND KLUANG ERL

Though there is a bus from Tampin to Melaka, the road trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

If the transport ministry can extend the ETS from Tampin/Pulau Sebang to Melaka Sentral/Duyung, the trip can be done within 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

In future, this ERL can extend it to Muar, Batu Pahat to Kluang.

ERL South-west corridor to join up with Kluang ERL.

Development will expand in this Melaka-Muar-Batu Pahat corridor.

ERL TO MELAKA?

The transport authority must relook at building a train link from KLIA ERL to Melaka.

With weekend jams of public roads from KL to Melaka, a direct rail link to Melaka is feasible. Instead of driving to Melaka, visitors can take an Aircon train from KL to Melaka.

On normal days, driving from KL to Melaka takes about 2 hours. On weekends, it can take from 3 to 4 hours.

With a train, KL to Melaka trip can done in 1 hour only. No jams as well.

ECRL BYPASS SINGAPORE IN JANUARY 2027

ECRL Bypass to Shenzhen saving 30 hours in time. Will operate on 1.1.2027 which is 6 months away.

Ships can unload their containers at Port Klang onto freight trains to be unloaded onto ships at Kuantan Port. Then, they can sail on to Danang, Hanoi in Vietnam, Cambodia, Hainan, SW China, Taiwan and Japan.

Ships can still sail down to Melaka, Singapore, Indonesia, Papua, Australia and New Zealand.

Kra canal or Thailand land bridge is still all talk.

With the Pinglu Canal being completed by September 2026, this new canal will allow freight to be shipped up to Nanning in China.

The Pinglu Canal is a massive new waterway in southern China. Spanning 134 kilometers, it directly links the inland Xijiang River system to the sea at the Beibu Gulf .

Set to open in September 2026—three months ahead of schedule—this $10.7 billion project is China’s first major river-to-sea canal since 1949 . It is designed to handle 5,000-tonne vessels, cutting the previous 560-km detour via Guangdong .

💡 Why does it matter?

· Cheaper & Faster Trade: It will slash logistics costs for southwestern China by 18-30% , saving an estimated $690 million annually .

· Boosting ASEAN Ties: As a "rail-water-sea" corridor, it aims to strengthen supply chains with ASEAN, China’s largest trading partner .

· Connecting Western China: It turns Guangxi into a key logistics hub, giving inland areas a much more efficient route to global markets .

While it’s a transformative regional project, analysts note it won’t rival the Suez or Panama Canals in global scale .

WINGSAIR FLY FROM MELAKA TO INDONESIA

Wings Air will fly from Melaka to Pekanbaru Indonesia from June 10 2026.

TOURISM MELAKA TRUST FUND

NationTrust fund to be established to manage Melaka heritage fees, preserve historic city

MELAKA: The Melaka Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution to establish a Heritage Fee Trust Fund to support the preservation and sustainability of the historic city’s heritage assets.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh (pic) said the fund would provide a structured mechanism to manage proceeds from a heritage fee imposed on tourists staying at registered hotels in the state.

He stressed that the fee would be carried out by hotels and channelled to local authorities acting as agents for the state government.

Ab Rauf said the move was in line with the state’s responsibility of preserving heritage sites following Melaka’s recognition, together with Georgetown, as a Unesco World Heritage Site on July 7, 2008.

"This recognition is not merely a matter of pride but a responsibility that requires continuous commitment from the state government to preserve and safeguard this heritage for future generations,” he said when tabling the motion on Tuesday (April 2
He added that the heritage fee would serve as a dedicated source of funding for conservation and tourism-related preservation efforts.
