3 ISLANDS PROPOSED AS MELAKA MARINE PARKS

MELAKA, July 24 — Three islands proposed to be gazetted as Melaka Marine Parks are currently in the final stages of the gazetting process which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries I Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah.

He said the gazetting of Pulau Undan, Pulau Nangka and Pulau Dodol under Section 41 of the Fisheries Act 1985 (Act 317) had been brought to the federal level following the approval by the state government recently.

He said the process was taking a while as it involved various processes and laws.

“The move to gazette the islands is important to guarantee the sustainability of fisheries resources and the diversity of marine biodiversity around the area in addition to making the marine parks as a special protection area for aquatic flora and fauna,” he told reporters after launching the operation to plant nine artificial reefs in the waters of Pulau Nangka here today.

KTMB extends Batu Caves Komuter service to Pulau Sebang in Melaka

KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) has extended its Klang Valley Komuter sector from Batu Caves to Pulau Sebang, Melaka, and return as an effort to boost the service.

In a statement Thursday (July 21), KTMB said the extension of the service involved eight existing trips during peak hours on weekdays, weekends and public holidays to meet the needs and demand of passengers.

For commuters in the Klang Valley sector, the extension involves four trips going to Pulau Sebang station compared with the previous terminal ending at the Sungai Gadut station in Negri Sembilan and for the Pulau Sebang to Batu Caves route, there will be four trips starting from the Pulau Sebang station, which used to start from Sungai Gadut.

“The latest schedule for the routes is effective from July 25,” said the statement.

MELAKA RIVER BOAT STAYS?

A potential method to popularise Melaka River is to allow river boat stays on our Melaka River. 

These boats/barges can be moored besides the river with WC facilities on land and rented out daily.  

On board cooking and dining can be allowed but waste food must be placed into bins on land. 

On the River Thames in London or on River Seine in Paris, people are allowed to stay on board  river boats.

According to Sulaiman, the Malacca World Heritage Site encompasses two zones, namely Core Zone (45.3 hectares) and Buffer Zone (242.8 hectares).

The Core Zone comprises of Bukit Malacca (St Paul’s Hill) and residential areas such as at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Street), Jalan Kampung Kuli, Jalan Tukang Emas, Jalan Tokong, Jalan Tukang Besi and Jalan Kampung Pantai.

Meanwhile, the Buffer Zone consists of Jalan Kubu, Jalan Bunga Raya, Jalan Kampung Jawa, Jalan Bendahara and Jalan Temenggong around the Core Zone, which serves to protect the core zone.

Sulaiman said the state government’s efforts to preserve the sites were through the establishment of the Malacca State Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration Enactment 1988, which listed and gazetted heritage buildings and monuments in Malacca.

Apart from that, the state government also set up the Preservation and Conservation Committee chaired by the Chief Minister and its members comprising government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) related to heritage.

The Malacca Heritage Festival 2022 celebration in conjunction with the 14th-anniversary celebration of Malacca as a UNESCO World Heritage City will be held on a large scale from July 15 to August 7.

Today, July 7 this year, marks the 14th anniversary of Malacca ’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site after being gazetted on July 7, 2008.-Bernama
