A NOBEL IN MALACCA IN 1923
Dr. Albert Einstein, freshly awarded the 1921 Physic Nobel Prize “for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect” was invited to give a series of lectures in Japan.
Albert Einstein and his wife Elsa set sail for a six months trip to the Far East, on 8 October 1922 from Marseille.
After a successful tour in Japan, where Albert and Elsa Einstein met with the emperor and the empress, they board the Haruna Maru, a brand-new ship built in 1922 (she was wrecked and sank in 1942) and depart Japan.
They stop in Singapore, Malacca and Penang.
In his Travel Diary, Albert Einstein wrote:
12th January: Departure from Singapore at 5 pm between glaringly green velveteen islets.
13th January: Arrival near Malacca in the early morning, where the ship held his position in the open sea until 3 pm.
We visited Malacca in the morning. Portuguese church and other buildings.
Vibrant mix of Indians, Malays, Chinese.
Two-wheeled carts with straw roofs, drawn by long-horned oxen.
Blazing tropical sun but less humid than in Singapore.
Discovered large fly in my electricity ointment in the afternoon. A pity.
True tropical heat.
14th January: Noon. Arrival in Penang
A month later, they arrive in the British Mandate of Palestine where they stay for twelve days, and finally visited Spain for two weeks before returning home.
For the state government, the deal to revive the stalled Melaka Gateway project marks a major step forward to expedite the development of Melaka Waterfront Economic Zone or M-WEZ, an economic corridor.
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali and KAJ Development chairman Datuk Daing A Malek Daing A Rahaman witnessed the signing and exchange of the seven MoU.
The first MoU was signed between MG Velocity Sdn Bhd, a nominee of KAJ, with X Infinity Property Sdn Bhd and Total Group Bhd for the development of the Melaka International Cruise Terminal (MICT). A RM1.5 billion investment will be channelled into the development of the cruise terminal on island PME1 of Melaka Gateway. The terminal will house customs, immigration and quarantine facilities, duty-free shopping mall, retail space and a luxury hotel. X Infinity Property and Total Group are involved in property development and investment holding respectively.
The second was signed between KAJ with Assetwall Sdn Bhd for the development of a world-class theme park offering 24 rides and attractions on 36 acres of land on island PME1 of Melaka Gateway. The theme park, involving an investment of RM1.5 billion, is targeted to be completed in early 2026. Assetwall is an investment holding company.
The third MoU was signed between KAJ and Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority, a government of Dubai authority and operating through its business division Dubai Airport Free Zone. The collaboration will look into the investment and operation of the proposed free trade zone on island PME1 of Melaka Gateway with a RM2 billion initial investment.
The fourth MoU was between Melaka ICT Holdings and Microsoft Corp Malaysia. The tie-up between the Malacca government company and the US tech giant is aimed at supporting the state’s digital transformation initiative.
The fifth MoU was between Canadian University Dubai (CUD) and Malaysia Multimedia University (MMU), which has a big campus in Malacca. CUD and MMU will explore cooperation in areas such as exchange of students, academicians, and non-academicians, programme collaboration in areas of mutual interest such as in the area of digital and technology and research collaboration and training in the fields of mutual interest to both universities.
The sixth MoU was between the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents Malacca Chapter and the Middle East Consortium Group, Global Travel Services to boost travel and tourism between the two regions.
The seventh MoU was between NRB Food Industries and 3Bumi Sdn Bhd to provide opportunities for the trading and distribution of food products to the Gulf Cooperation Council, North Africa, and the Middle East.
DUBAI (March 14): The Melaka government plans to build an undersea tunnel for a rail system network linking Melaka and Dumai in Indonesia.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said according to plans, the tunnel would be built across the Straits of Melaka.
"This is a long-term plan. The shortest distance between Melaka and Dumai is 47 kilometres," he told a press conference after the launch of Melaka Week at Expo 2020 Dubai at the Malaysia Pavilion on Monday (March 14).
Commenting on the same matter, Melaka senior executive councillor for Investment, Industry and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said so far one company had expressed interest to build the tunnel.
However, he said the agreement and approval of the Indonesian government was required for the project to be implemented.
"The firm from Malaysia is only capable of meeting 50% of the total project cost.
"If everything goes smoothly, construction of the tunnel will take four to five years,” he added.
The project is seen as capable of helping to boost the gross domestic product growth of Melaka.
Melaka's economy is currently highly dependent on the services sector but the manufacturing industry is fast catching up.
KAJ Development is expected to complete a world class Theme park at Melaka Gateway by 2026.
The new Theme Park is bigger than the Genting Highland Theme Park.
This project was announced recently.
A new cruise ship terminal will also be constructed within 15 months.
This Melaka Gateway project is expected to bring in investments and create jobs in Melaka. You
Melaka state government earlier this week has launched a new bus service called Singgah-Singgah Melaka that focuses on several popular tourist locations. Managed by the state-owned bus operator, Panorama Melaka together with WSH Automotive, the new service involved the usage of seven electric buses although only one will be operational at first.
The route which starts and ends at Melaka Sentral covers Melaka Zoo, Quayside, Taming Sari Tower, Submarine Museum, and Dataran Klebang. With the aim to serve around 290,000 passengers per year, the hop-on hop-off bus service is currently available for free until the end of May 2022.
It is rather an interesting move by the state which has already embarked on the electric bus journey back in 2015. The original plan was said to involve 40 electric buses from Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation but only two of them made their way to Melaka before they were discontinued in 2018 as part of a cost-cutting exercise by Panorama Melaka. These electric buses eventually ended up going through restoration at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). However, it is not known if the Melaka state government has any plans to put back these buses into active service.(Source: Tourism Melaka, Melaka Hari Ini via Facebook.)

MELAKA: The mega coastal reclamation project worth RM43bil, Melaka Gateway, will be back in the hands of the original developer, KAJ Development Sdn Bhd, whose contract was terminated by the state government in 2020.
Melaka industrial and investment committee chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the state government would allow the company to continue the project as originally planned.
"The project is expected to generate a revenue of RM15bil in the next six years.
"We have no problem with KAJ Development continuing the development," he said after visiting the project site at Pulau Melaka here on Tuesday (March 8).
KAJ Development chief executive officer Datuk Michelle Ong was present during the visit.
Ab Rauf said the developer had also pledged to complete the RM1.5bil Melaka International Cruise Terminal within 15 months.
A RM1.5bil theme park would also be completed by 2026, he added.
"The project is expected to draw a net investment totalling RM46bil, including through foreign direct investments," he said.
In November 2020, KAJ Development’s contract for the project was terminated by the state government after it failed to complete the work by the given date.
In response, the company highlighted how it had spent close to a decade planning and nurturing the project, which entailed the construction of three reclaimed islands, a deep-water port and a cruise terminal as well as commercial and residential properties.
The following month, KAJ Development filed a judicial review to challenge the termination of the land reclamation concession notice issued by the Melaka government.
The company stated in the suit that it had submitted several written requests to the statement to extend the three-year land reclamation concession which began on Oct 4, 2017, but to no avail.
A notice of termination was issued to the company claiming that it had failed to complete the project as scheduled.
On Feb 9, KAJ Development Sdn Bhd wanted to resolve the termination with the state government after the legal action came up before a three-member panel of the Federal Court chaired by Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf in Putrajaya.
Launched in 2014, the Melaka Gateway project, covering 552.8ha, was estimated to be worth RM43bil.
However, the project went through much uncertainty following the change of administration in the Melaka government in May 2018 when Pakatan Harapan came into power.
Disputes also emerged over the freehold land status given to the developer and environmental impact issues affecting residents of the historic Portuguese Settlement.
