MELAKA CELEBRATES HER 7TH. BIRTHDAY AS A HISTORIC CITY
15th. April 2010
Happy 7th. Birthday to the Historic City of Melaka. 7 years ago, Melaka was declared Melaka Historic City and all Malaccans stood proud as Melaka is now recognised as historic.
In July 2008, Melaka gained world recognition as Unesco World Heritage City together with Georgetown, Penang. This new title was indeed well deserving to all Malaccans in Melaka and around the world. With Melaka 600 years of history, different cultures have blended together which can be seen in her rich cultural heritage, buildings, cuisines and languages.
Melaka shows the world that there can be UNITY in DIVERSITY. Different peoples, races and of different religious backgrounds, can indeed forge together as One. We can work, play, learn and understand one another despite our differences in language, cultures, religions and backgrounds. What we need is the determination in helping each other in times of needs and standing together as one.
It certainly makes me proud that as a Malaccan born in Melaka about 54 years ago is alive to see Melaka being declared a World Heritage City in 2008 and beyond. More work and effort must still be done by all Malaccans and Friends of Melaka around the globe. We can learn from everybody who wants Melaka to progress further in the years ahead.
For Malaccans in Melaka, let us show off to our visitors our different cultures and show them our hospitality, grace and cuisines. Make our visitors feel at home, away from home.
For Malaccans residing or earning their living in foreign lands, do not forget your roots and always encourage and inform the peoples of different lands of Melaka where it all began for all of us. We should be proud of our heritage wherever we are.
HAPPY 7TH BIRTHDAY MELAKA ON THIS HISTORIC DAY.

GAS POWERED TRAM SYSTEM FOR MELAKA BY JUNE 2011

Melaka to introduce RM272m tram transportation service
2010/03/03
MELAKA: Historic Melaka will be introducing a RM272 million tram transportation system which will begin at the Plaza Tol Ayer Keroh here and cover 23 locations and a distance of 40 km to downtown.
Work on the project, which is still awaiting approval from the Transportation Ministry, is expected to take off in May this year with completion and operations expected in May or June next year.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the tram system will be powered by natural gas, the first such tram to be introduced in the world with a speed of 60 to 80 km per hour.
The project will be a joint venture between the Melaka State Government, through its Chief Minister Incorporated (CMI), and MRails International Sdn Bhd (MRails).
"The building of this tram system is in line with the progressive Melaka (Melaka Maju) 2010 status and will enhance the public transportation system in Melaka which gets congested especially during the weekend," Mohd Ali told reporters following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between CMI and MRails here today.
Also present at today's event was the Patron of MRails, Tengku Muda Pahang Tengku Abd Rahman ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah, Melaka State Secretary Datuk Wira Omar Kaseh, President of MRails Datuk Jeya Kumar and Chief Executive Officer of MRails Datuk Mohamed Shamsherudin Mohd Shariff.
CMI will have a 20 per cent interest in the project while MRails which has a paid-up capital of RM1 million will hold the rest. The funding of the project will be via private funding initiative.
The tram has a maximum capacity for 40 coaches and 6,000 passengers.
The number of passengers expected to use the tram services has been projected at 250,000 passengers a month.
Mohd Ali said fares will be at RM2 one way while for senior citizens and school children, it will be free.
Among the popular spots the tram will pass on its route are Hotel Seri Malaysia, Botanical Gardens, Melaka Zoo, Melaka International Trade Centre, Taman Muzaffar Shah, Pantai Hospital, Masjid Al-Azim, Hospital Melaka, Renaissance Hotel, Dataran Pahlawan, Hotel Mahkota, Harbour Club, Equatorial Hotel and Bukit Baru.
The main station will be located at a 20-hectare area at Plaza Tol Ayer Keroh which will also include the development of a parking area for vehicles.
Meanwhile, Jeya told reporters that the tram, which will run on a single track, will be air-conditioned and the first model coach will be brought in from China.
He said Mrails had a partnership with CNR Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co Ltd (China), the biggest manufacturer of rail transport vehicles in the country.
The remaining coaches for the Melaka tram system will be built up in Tanjung Agas, Pahang which will include spare part facilities.
The Melaka tram is expected to operate from five in the morning to midnight with its frequency three to five minutes apart during peak hours.
"The people and tourists here will be getting the best in convenience through the tram transportation system which will be employing a green technology and be people-friendly as well," Jeya added.- Bernama

ELECTRIC/GAS POWERED TUK-TUK FOR MELAKA AS WELL?
23rd. February 2010
Why not we introduce the electric driven or natural gas driven "Tuk-Tuk" ( 3 wheeled mini-trishaws ) for visitors and Malaccans to travel easily around Melaka? Some tuk-tuks of Thailand are designed to incorporate air-conditioning in their cabs and are gas driven or electric driven.
Electric or gas driven tuk-tuks can be brought in at lower costs and implemented easily on existing roads. They should be tried and tested for road worthiness and safety on our Malacca roads. They should be used for short and medium range distance and within the heritage area. Being green, these tuk-tuks are environmentally friendly, minimum noise and do not pollute the heritage area.
We call upon the Melaka Historical City Council to expedite such a study and buy some units of these electric tuk-tuks for trial runs and test their effectiveness.
Let us think out of the box and also learn from our neighbouring country like Bangkok on this matter.

NATURAL GAS POWERED TRAM SYSTEM FOR MELAKA PROPOSED
23rd. February 2010
Melaka State Government want to introduce tram service system starting from Old Ayer Keroh Road (Jalan Ayer Keroh Lama) to the City center for an effort to reduce the traffic jam especially in tourist main area like Banda Hilir.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd. Ali Rustam Said that the tram proposal will be tabled in the State Exco Meeting this week.
If the tram service becomes a reality, it will be not just another Public Transportation but a tourism product because the nature of the service itself.
Of course tram is not the fastest public transportation available if we compare it to buses or taxis. But when we go to Melbourne Australia for example, rather than using the bus, we are very keen to try the Melbourne Metropolitan Tram to enjoy it. Like sitting in an classic locomotive but at the middle of the road with car and motorcycle.
Just a few existing tram systems are available in Asia and Malaysia have none. Other countries with trams are India, Japan and Hong Kong. Hong Kong trams are historical artifacts as the service was started in early of 20th century.
Webmaster: The proposed tram system should compliment the existing transporting systems currently available. Also, it should be integrated with them as well. Prompt, efficient and clean service is needed while the fares should be fair and reasonable. If possible, the electric tram system should be self propelled with light weight re-chargeable batteries/gas powered so that we do not have to install ugly electric guides to propel these trams. By doing so, only the railtrack is placed onto the road without the electric cables installed above.

MAGLEV TRAIN FROM KLIA OR TAMPIN TO MELAKA
5th.January 2010
Recently, it was reported that a Chinese rail company has been invited to Malaysia to do some feasibility project proposals for high speed trains from KL to JB, KL to Kuantan and a Maglev train from Butterworth to Georgetown.
Tourism Melaka will like to express our opinion that a proposal be made for a Maglev train from KLIA to Melaka or from Tampin to Melaka. This Maglev train if built, will encourage visitors to visit historic Melaka upon arrival from KLIA or from Tampin via high-speed train from KL.
The benefit for Malaccans will be good as more visitors will travel to enjoy the sights and sounds of Malacca. At the same time, Malaccans can work in Kuala Lumpur but stays in Malacca as travel time will be in mere one hour.
We need to think out of the box for 2010. Happy New Year 2010 to everyone.
Here is the news report about the train proposals.
Chinese railroad company eyes projects in M'sia
KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 3, 2010): Malaysia will work with Tangshan Railway Vehicle Compang, which rolled out the China-made bullet trains late last month, to carry out three rail projects estimated to cost RM1 billion in the country.
According to a report in Nanyang Siang Pau today, the projects are a track for magnetic levitation (maglev) trains between George Town and Butterworth and two high-speed rail links -- between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru and between Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan -- that allow trains to reach 350km per hour.
The report said Tangshan Raiway Vehicle Company, a unit of China CNR Corporation Ltd, has been invited by MRailways International Sdn Bhd, to explore rail opportunities in Malaysia.
Sources said MRails has received a letter of authorisation from Tangshan Railway Vehicle last month for the proposed maglev rail project in Penang on a joint-venture basis.
Apart from the George Town-Butterworth maglev rail project, Tangshan Railway Vehicle also intends to undertake the Kuala Lumpur-Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan high-speed rail projects.
The two high-speed rail links being planned are similar to the 1,068km Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway that went into service last month.
Dubbed the bullet trains of China, the trains operating the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway can reach 350km per hour.
The three projects, if implemented, can be completed in three to five years.
