Tragic loss of a landmark for Malaccans. This tree was over 100 years old!
It was there BEFORE automobiles were invented (which means before the Shell Station) and before hawkers set up their business to take advantage of its cool shade.
I snapped the attached photo of the tree last February. The tree looked healthy with its wide canopy still lush in vibrant green.
Besides, I don't see any signs of rot in the posted photos of cut sections of the tree trunk....so I find it hard to believe any claims that the tree was dying from widespread rot.
Let's see what happens next...if the majlis or property owner plants a new tree, it will at least show that someone cares.
If nothing happens, it shows that whatever the excuse to chop down this majestic tree was total bullsh*t (pardon my French), and they don't know how to appreciate nature's gift to mankind...probably the same people who always complain abt Malacca's weather getting hotter.
